Sofia Coppola Wants Candy, Needs Filmmaking Lessons
British punk veterans Bow Wow Wow are newly reunited and poised to make a comeback if Sofia Coppola has anything to say about it. Coppola asked the band to re-record classic tunes, including their hit "I Want Candy" and a cover of Johnny Mercer's "Fools Rush In" for the soundtrack of her upcoming film, Marie Antoinette.
The soundtrack for the film, which appears to be a period piece, will also include Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, New Order, Adam and The Ants and the Strokes.
OK, let's break this down. You have a period film, with a soundtrack by some seriously classic British punk bands (with the exception of the Strokes, who are corporate garage rock's answer to the Backstreet Boys, only not as talented). This will probably make for a great soundtrack, assuming you don't own almost everything on the album, but the film will probably be pretty bad, although not a flop.
I think it will be bad because it's been done; there have been period films with modern soundtracks before (A Knight's Tale, anyone?), and they've been OK, and by OK I mean "entertaining enough to sit on the couch and watch on a Saturday morning" kind of way, but not great.
It won't flop because it's Sofia Coppola and for some reason people seem to love her work. This is the person who made Lost In Translation and won a bunch of awards even though the film wasn't very good. In fact, it was rather bad, but nobody seemed to notice. Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate every minute of it, and in fact think it would have made an amazing 30-minute short film. But as a feature length? Forget it.
At any rate, at least we'll be able to thank her for Annabella L'win and company making a comeback, and some great upbeat punk from Bow Wow Wow.
And who knows? Maybe the movie will be as good as "I Want Candy." Probably not, but we'll see.
