Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Announces the Class of 2007 - Where's Iggy?
Punk rock got its props with the announcement of the 2007 class in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; punk poet Patti Smith made the cut this year.
But once again, Iggy and the Stooges didn't.
I'm not sure what the reason for denying them what surely has become their God-given right. Granting admission to the Sex Pistols, Clash and Ramones, and then denying the Stooges their place once again seems a bit like a travesty.
There are some that say that punk doesn't belong there at all, namely the punks. But if they are going to grant access to some of the forefathers, and then neglect Iggy, it's a big slap in the face.
Patti does deserve her place, but can you honestly tell me that all of the remaining inductees (Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, R.E.M., the Ronettes, Patti Smith and Van Halen) deserve their spots ahead of the guys who brought you "I Wanna Be Your Dog"?
Is this going to continue? Years from now, are we going to be seeing bands like Green Day (who will most assuredly get in at some point) or even some random screamo band getting into the hall, and Iggy still being denied?
And while we're at it, when are the New York Dolls gonna get their shot?
The whole this seems a little odd to me. Maybe we should start our own Punk Rock Hall of Fame. Iggy would be in there for sure.
That's a good exercise to play along with at home. If you were going to start your own Punk Hall of Fame, who would you be in your inaugeral class?
