Interview: Dave Kirchgessner of Mustard Plug
For 15 years and six albums, Mustard Plug has been a mainstay in the ska punk world. To be sure, I'll always have an affinity for the Plug. Mustard Plug shows were a near-monthly ritual at Club Soda. They were as much a social gathering and reunion as they were a show.
That wouldn't make any difference if Mustard Plug had stagnated as a band. Too many ska bands did that; churning out the same old tired two-tone songs. Mustard Plug has managed to keep it fresh, retaining their old fans, and attracting a new generation of ska and punk kids.
The band is currently on tour, supporting In Black And White, but I spoke briefly with Mustard Plug frontman Dave Kirchgessner about the secrets to their longevity and his predictions for a "Fourth Wave" of ska. (Spoiler Alert! It probably ain't gonna happen any time soon.
