Add Dakota Fanning to the Mix, and The Runaways is Looking Worse and Worse

Friday March 6, 2009

I thought the movie execs had hit the lowest of the lows when they announced that Twilight star Kristen Stewart had signed on to play a young Joan Jett in the upcoming biopic, The Runaways.

Now they have made another announcement. It seems that Dakota Fanning may be slated to play Cherie Currie, the lead singer of the group.

Fanning does have a more impressive resume than Stewart, but I still don’t know that she’d be the best fit. I’m not sure if they made this decision because they think she’ll do a good job as Currie, or because she is also slated to play a vampire in the upcoming sequel to Twilight. Maybe they got her and Stewart as a package deal.

It seems like they’re just trying to get all of the big young names they can to populate the cast, rather than worrying about making a decent movie. At this rate, they may as well just make Josie and The Pussycats 2.

I wonder who they’ll get to play Lita Ford? It’s too bad the Olsen twins are getting up there in years, they could have picked the two of them to play one Lita Ford, and not made any worse choice than they’ve made so far. Or, if they’re just looking to get the youngsters into the theaters, why not go for broke with Miley Cyrus?

Most likely though, we’ll just have to wait to see who they recruit to be the next young vampire star.

Why can’t they ever just choose some obscure actors that actually fit a part? If you are going to play Joan Jett, or any punk icons at all, then you better have the personality to go with it. Neither Stewart nor Fanning would be willing to get in a real brawl, herego this film will go down in flames, and spread the view of punk as crap bands like Good Charlotte, instead of ones like Cock Sparrer. Thanks a lot, Hollywood.
