Chiodos Frontman Craig Owens is still Craig Owens, but he's no longer the Chiodos Frontman...

Thursday September 24, 2009

Following a successful run on the 2009 Vans Warped Tour, the members of Chiodos have announced that lead singer Craig Owens has been kicked out. The band made this statement on their MySpace page:

To all of our friends, family, and fans: We would like to let you know that we have let Craig Owens go as the singer of Chiodos. This decision was a necessary one. Out of respect for all of the hard work that we have put in together for all of these years we will not be discussing the specific reasons that this needed to happen. We wish Craig well. We will absolutely be continuing on as a band and we will keep you informed as this next chapter unfolds. Chiodos fans are the best fans in the world and all we can ask of you, after everything you have already given us, is to share in our excitement for this next album. We promise you will not be disappointed............Brad, Jason, Pat, and Matt

So it would appear that decision was almost entirely consensual, except for, you know, on the part of Owens.

This is the second time the band has booted a member so far this year. They fired Derrick Frost back in May. I'm thinking that band meetings are probably a little like being a contestant on Survivor: Emo Island right now.

We’ll let you know more as we hear it.

Thats kinda of a useless review.
1st – you just quoted what the band said and compared it to survivor.
2nd – Craig had lots of other projects going on and was almost “too busy” for the rest of the band.
3rd – “Emo Island” Chiodos is not considered to be in the ‘emo’ category.
Furthermore, if ‘emo’ was a genre then all bands could be considered ‘emo’ because music without emotion is no music.

I like how the guy writes a “punk” music blog yet, reviews a so called “emo” band. From my knowledge the two genres are nothing alike and Chiodos isn’t considered “emo”. Whatever qualifies something as being emo anyway.

To those who don’t know, “Emo” is not short for “emotion.” It is short for Emotive Hardcore (Hardcore fueled by strong emotion), the stuff where the singer would be screaming and get pretty worked up because it was something that affected him deeply and may start crying. This genre almost completely disappeared in the late 90’s and the bands were NEVER big. If a band is played on the radio or has 2k+ people at their shows like Chiodos, they’re not actually emo. But since Chiodos is commonly classified as “Post-Hardcore,” they fit better into the emo category than you’d expect.
