The various parts of the Law and Order TV series have long been a place for actors to get their starts and for bigger names to do cameos. Over the years, punk celebrities like Joan Jett and Jackass cast member Ryan Dunn have managed to slip appearances into the short witness and suspect montages, and now punk priestess and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Patti Smith is going to get a shot.
On "Icarus," the episode of Law and Order: Criminal Intent airing Sunday on USA, Smith plays Columbia University mythology professor Cleo Alexander, who is interviewed for a case involving the death of a Broadway musical actor who dies while performing a stunt.
Smith told TV Guide that the experience was a bit tougher than anticipated:
I've never really acted, but I highly respect the craft. I knew that it wasn't going to be simple, but it was a little more daunting than I expected.
If you're like me, and you want to see Smith appear without having to actually watch the show, TV Guide has her clip on their website. It's probably the best part of the episode, and you can catch it here.
As anyone whose watched any of these shows could tell you, stories are "ripped from the headlines." My investigation into the story has revealed that this episode is modeled after injuries stemming from production of Broadway's Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, and not mosh pit mishaps from the production of American Idiot, as I had initially suspected.
