Interview with Norwood Fisher of Fishbone (cont.)

"I actually do laugh at what I do"

RC: So thinking back to when this all started, did you think you'd still be doing this in 2007, with Fishbone going strong like it is?

NF: You know, it definitely was my intention to be around and to be in it for the long haul and actually I'm at a point in my life where there's no doubt that I laid my past with true love of the music in mind, and I'm striving to further things in an artistic way and have a lot of fun.

I actually do laugh at what I do as well. In fact, the best parts of it make me laugh when I'm creating it. It's all of that together and I really do appreciate still being here. There's a part of me that misses the old guys but the guys I'm rolling with now are having so much fun being in Fishbone and we all have such a good time together that I can honestly say that we're right now in one of the best positions that we've ever been in in our career.

RC: So what's next ? Just keep going with Fishbone and see where it goes for another twenty something years?

NF: Yeah dude! We just did a show in Byron Bay in Australia - the Byron Bay Blues Festival - and Bo Diddley is one of the headliners on this. Bo Diddley is one of the architects of this rock and roll thing. We got funk because of Bo Diddley, because he put down this chunky rhythm that was hard to beat and easy to dance to. He opened the door to rock which turned into funk.

So, I met him and he was having such a good time. He was partying, telling jokes, holding court with a bunch of nice young ladies. And you know what? I don't know exactly how old he is, but he's more than 20 years older than me. I know that, and that mother f***er was having a ball and if I can be smiling the way he was smiling 20 years from now, or 30 years from now, that's a f***ing killer place to be. Especially if we can keep 'em skanking, moshing and dancing to what we do.

RC: Is there anything you'd like to add?

NF: Just to check out the Fishbone Web site, because we'll be coming out with some extra goodies as soon as possible. We're gearing up for a hard touring year, but in between we're planning on doing some recording and putting out some EPs, at least one EP if not two, before we get to the next record.
