Jim Lindberg - Punk Rock Dad

Collins

Simply put, this is a book that I read in nearly one sitting. Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down again.

In Punk Rock Dad, Pennywise frontman Jim Lindberg details what goes into raising three daughters, juggling that with fronting a band and touring, and finding time for a marriage and to give his wife the breaks that she needs.

It's very funny, as one would expect when the singer of the band behind "F**k Authority" deals with the simple paradox of trying to raise children and keep order when you are still rebelling against the world. In typical punk rock fashion, there's a lot of scatological references, but they are placed in the realm of changing diapers and potty-training, rather than in the form of adolescent humor (but then again, Lindberg does manage to apply a lot of adolescent humor to the topic of parenting, so it evens out).

Aside from his philosophies and anecdotes on juggling the world of parenting and rocking, Lindberg also exposes an issue that seems to arise more and more lately: punk rock is getting older. Whether he's describing meeting a fan in a drugstore while he has a cart full of baby supplies or talking about having to get the kids to bed before heading out to play a show, he's examining the way things are going. Punks are buying homes in the 'burbs, raising families, and still trying to figure out how they can settle down without really settling down.

When it comes down to it, probably the most amazing thing about this book is that Lindberg had the time to write it all, with everything he has going on, but I'm really glad he did. He has a voice that rings true for punks and parents alike, and I think you'll dig this one whether or not you have kids, and this will be a perfect Father's Day gift for all of the Punk Rock Dads you know.
