I've yet to have any kids of my own, but I come from a large enough family and have enough friends with kids to know that parents often do whatever they can to keep their children entertained. Sometimes this means subjecting themselves to repeated playings of kids' music from the likes of the Wiggles or (shudder) Barney.

Fortunately, this offering from Go Kart records provides some relief.

Toned Down... But Not Too Much

Brats On The Beat is a collection of kid-friendly versions of Ramones songs. Now for the most part, aside from the occasional reference to cocaine or the KKK, Ramones songs were never that unfriendly to kids, so the job wouldn't have been that difficult.

In fact, it could have been simply thrown together, and Go Kart could have taken a pat on the back and moved on. That they didn't do that, and went all out on this record is what makes it a pleasure for grownups to listen to as well as kids.

This album is an all-star assembly of punk names, starting with the album's producer. Brats On The Beat was produced by Jennifer Precious Finch of the girl act L7. The musicians she's brought together represent a punk rock honor roll as well.

Great Versions For A Great Cause

The album opens with Jim Lindberg from Pennywise, who belts out a version of "Blitzkreg Bop" that's fun and upbeat, and refreshing even though it's a common song to be covered. All of the songs on the album are that way. Whether it's Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio doing "Rock 'N' Roll High School", the Bouncing Souls' Greg Attonito doing "Do You Remember Rock 'N' Roll Radio?", or even Blag Dahlia of the Dwarves (arguably the least kid-friendly group out there), who has a great time with "Rockaway Beach", there is not a single dud on the album.

By the time it closes with the legendary Jack Grisham of TSOL and his take on "Bop 'Til You Drop", any kid within listening range will have become a Ramones fan.

Bonus points are awarded to this record for rounding out the songs with a handful of kids on the choruses which adds to the fun, and for the fact that a portion of the proceeds from the record go to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Personally, I prefer the originals. Who wouldn't? That being said, I have listened to this a few times and sang along the whole time without being turned off by any hints of saccharine or cheese. This album is great, and will be great buy for punk rock parents who wake up at night in a cold sweat, screaming the theme from Barney.
